OK/Cancel is one year old today. As Tom likes to say, we are certain that we are now the longest running and best HCI-themed comic strip on the internet (and even the Internet). We have a few things planned to celebrate in the coming week so stay tuned.
In the meantime, it’s time for another contest!In addition to being one year old, we are also appproaching 1000 comments. So we are giving away a limited edition set of two OK/Cancel stickers and a full set of OK/Cancel trading cards to the 1000th commentor. The rules are simple:
- We won’t count comments by Tom or myself
- We will only count your first comment from this post onward
- Posts in articles and comics are both valid but we’ll still only count the first
Looking back at the past year, I can’t really believe I’ve drawn this many comics about HCI. I’d like to take a moment and reflect on my Top 5 OK/Cancel Comics of the First Season:
- 5. First Things First : It’s great on its own but if you read the actual feature list of what’s gold plating and what’s “must have”, it’s a real gem. Feel free to guess on the comments
- 4. One Way Mirror : Like anything that’s classic, I love it because it’s true.
- 3. Extreme Budget Usability : It’s simply a question of which panel is best in this one. We definitely need to do more like this one.
- 2. Game Over, Man : Can I really not put a gaming comic on the list given my interest in gaming and HCI?
- 1. Nothin’ But a UCD Thang Pt. 1 : I’m torn between this, which has the Reservoir Dogs entrance and the best three names we came up with (Nielly, LL Spool J and Snoop Toggy Tog) and Pt. 3 with Voltron and fights. Pt. 4 I like for the art but in the end Pt. 1 wins.

“First time caller, long time listener …” Uh! I mean … let me post my 100th comment.
Seriously though, the series of comics about East vs. West culminating with the Adaptive Path cinco becoming Voltron was just priceless. The whole rap that came out of it … everything! Definitely a fave moment.
I do have to say that while I come for the comics, I stay and return during the week for the though provoking articles and ensuing discussion. As good as any blog, list, or forum otherwise out there.
Thank you for your tireless efforts for keeping this space alive.
I hope you stay around for a long time to come.
How could you leave “Kicking the Llama” off the Top Five list? That CD player UI is so true-to-life it’s scary.
The whole “let’s turn the UCD big names into gangsta rap stars and super heroes” thing (or should I say “thang”) leaves me cold, though. I’m more interested in usability itself than the politics of the usability profession, so I didn’t even recognize all of the players (or should I say “playas”).

I don’t know why, but I crack up everytime I read the 3rd panel in April Tools. You captured Simon’s attitude so well… I want to have him in my usability tests just to spice things up a bit.
I have to agree. The UCD battle was the tops. The funniest part to me was where the user gets hurt and we read “Stop the battle!” –Maybe it’s because I have participated in many heated debates only to realize in the end that the ‘user’ got pushed aside while we argued our points to death…
Anyway, happy birthday! And I hope you continue for a long time. I have much more to learn from everyone’s perspective!
Your rap: “We Got It” was the first time I’d seen your column/comic, and I was hooked! My group has posted many of your comics on our bulletin board and so many of them ring true. All of your top 5 were hits with me and so were many of the others. I had just started learning the “big names” in the field when your amazing 5-part series was published… giving me a big laugh even though I hadn’t yet heard these guys speak in person yet.
In all, extremely clever comics and great weekly topics that have helped me learn a new (to me) field. Keep up the great work in Year 2!!
