Office Space

Yes. That’s why the copyright says, “(Apologies to Mike Judge)” and the first line of my post underneath the comic mentions the movie.

I haven’t seen Office Space but I found this comic TOTALLY speaks to me and I think it’s very much a worthwhile adaptation from the movie not a ripoff. I’m a technical writer without an onerous workload and contributed to the interface design of an inhouse system awhile ago. I knew zero about interface design, got a few tips from the net and helped create a design that while not fantastic was a significant improvement on the current inhouse interfaces as not a whit of design thought had gone into them. However, although I thought I proved myself I have not been called on further - or I was involved initially in one design but then sidelined off it. The interface ended up with a scrollable text box three lines deep which deeply offended me and when I asked how they could let that happen I was told “we were space constrained.” I couldn’t figure out why I’d been sidelined because I’d worked harmoniously with the others involved on my first project and thought that my aptitude would be valued but then I realised it was because I was perceived as being too friendly with the users and “taking their side”. I guess I did take their side simply because I thought what they asked for was entirely reasonable but I didn’t think it was in a hostile way or in a way that the systems people would take badly but obviously that seems to be the case. Anyway, this is my favourite work comic. I love it. Thank you.

OK/Cancel is a comic strip collaboration co-written and co-illustrated by Kevin Cheng and Tom Chi. Our subject matter focuses on interfaces, good and bad and the people behind the industry of building interfaces - usability specialists, interaction designers, human-computer interaction (HCI) experts, industrial designers, etc. (Who Links Here) ?
